In the mood for some Ike?
Sad new about Sylvia Robinson (Sugar Hill Records) passing today. With such a huge catalogue of music it’s hard to pull out a couple of records to highlight the importance of her contribution to rap music and music as a whole. It could be argued Rappers Delight was the blueprint for modern RnB as we know it.
Anyway, I’ve picked West Street Mob as that was the first Sugar Hill 12” I ever bought and became an early Electro anthem for me. Then I picked Treacherous Three’s Xmas Rap because it featured in the movie Beat Street which I used to watch religously as a kid, to this day it’s the only rap record I own that I know every single word to by heart from beginning to end.
I’m starting a new series called ROTD - just to keep vinyl alive ‘n shit. Whatcha know about MC Shy D?
